Today, several technologies such as the social media, the Internet, and even mobile communication have greatly influenced and fueled globalization and internationalization. Consequently, international education is not just a good option but a necessity to help instill a greater cultural awareness and sense of globalization in the new generations. The cultural differences across nations are one of the greatest threats to globalization. Most people find it difficult to navigate across cultural and religious barriers and integrate or interact in the international scope. However, by nurturing a global attitude early enough, such barriers can be dismantled. This is clearly what International Baccalaureate (IB) stands for. IB is a programme designed to offer students across several countries with a sound education and excellent learning experience as its curriculum is designed to make the students culturally aware. The programme wields trendy techniques to birth a sense of cultural awareness, globalization and academic soundness within students.A synopsis on IB ProgrammesThe International Baccalaureate offers four distinct programmes, each targeted at academic excellence and cultural awareness. The programmes are namely: Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP), and Career-related Programme (CP). These programmes have their different study focuses and students’ age ranges. The students’ age range for PYP is 3-12; 11-16 for MYP; 16-19 for DP; and 16-19 for CP. At present, up to 4,000 schools across the globe feature IB programmes and a sum total of about 70,000 teachers teach IB courses in these schools. Schools in which IB programmes are taught, are known as IB World Schools. Currently, there are more than a million IB students worldwide and, of course, the number keeps increasing as the days go by. Indeed, IB leverages better teaching approaches than the traditional school system and therefore offers students a better learning.Performance of IB StudentsIt comes as no surprise that IB students perform better than traditional students. This assertion was not just drawn from an anecdotal evidence, scientific research has proven it to be true. A study targeted at the PYP and MYP IB programmes found that IB students in these programmes performed better than their counterparts in traditional programmes, especially in reading, mathematics, expository writing and narrative writing. Further studies also revealed that IB students in DP are more prepared for college than their non-IB peers. The aforementioned studies, and many others, clearly show that IB students are indeed better than their non-IB peers in academics. Moreover, IB students are also much better than their counterparts emotionally and socially. IB students are exposed to the global culture and therefore can really perform better than their counterparts in international relations.Currently, IB is taught in three basic languages: English, Spanish and French. Students in IB World Schools are encouraged to integrate culturally and be more culturally aware than their non-IB peers by learning a second language and going beyond the confines of their local educational system and terrain.IB students go beyond the confines of their state or country to learn and operate in the international scope. The limitations and bottleneck imposed by their country’s educational systems do not hold them back because they literally operate in a higher terrain, an international scope.Students are able to participate actively in the rapidly changing world. IB World Schools take education beyond the confines of the classroom and help students to appreciate the beauty of collaborating in the globalized world.
