Curcumin

. Many of the studies have to do with cancer, alzheimers, aging, oxidative stress and so forth. Curcumin comes with a long history and tradition of being used for health needs. It has been used for centuries in Asia for its healing properties.

What is Curcumin? Curcumin (diferuloylmethane), is a low-molecular-weight polyphenol derived from the rhizome Curcuma longa, is an active ingredient in the spice turmeric. The compound is considered generally safe and studies in animals and humans have shown it has antineoplastic activity in a well tolerable dose. One such study published in 2010 states “Emerging evidence suggests the beneficial role of chemopreventive agents commonly known as nutraceutical in cancer. Among many such agents, soy isoflavones, curcumin, green tea polyphenols, 3,3′-diindolylmethane, resveratrol, lycopene, vitamin D, etc. have been found to prevent, reverse, or delay the carcinogenic process. Interestingly, these agents have also shown to prevent or delay the progression of cancer, which could in part be due to their ability to attack CSCs or EMT-type cells by attenuating the Wnt and Hedgehog signaling pathways.” Another recent study concludes that “the findings demonstrate that the presence of curcumin significantly enhances the ultrasound-induced cell death and ROS level, and induces the collapse of DeltaPsim, suggesting that ultrasound sonication can increase the cell death of NPC cells in the presence of curcumin and that the treatment using curcumin and ultrasound together is a potential therapeutic modality in the management of malignant tumors.” A fascinating study published in 2010 states “Lu et al recently discovered that curcumin induced DNA damage in a mouse-rat hybrid retina ganglion cell line. The real time PCR analysis showed that curcumin decreased expression levels of DNA damage response genes”. Now although Curcumin alone has some very promising health benefits, there are also scientific studies involving the combination of Curcumin with other ingredients as published on the curcuminsupplement.com website. Dr. Joe McChord proves that although Curcumin alone has a positive effect on reducing oxidative stress when combined with 4 other ingredients, the effects are synergystic in their reduction of oxidative stress as measured by T-Bar reduction. Oxidative stress has been tied to over 200 diseases and is noticable the older one gets. We recommend not spending a dime on Curcumin supplements alone until you read how the effects of Curcumin can be magnified.
